Preventing Fleas & Ticks and the Diseases They Carry
From itchy infestations to flea– and tick-borne illnesses, parasites can pose real problems when pets are left unprotected.
Because we enjoy a mild climate, fleas and ticks (and mosquitoes) are abundant throughout the year, leaving pets at risk of becoming warm-blooded hosts.
In addition to a potentially expensive infestation within the home, fleas carry harmful diseases that can be transmitted to our pets.
These include:
- Tapeworm
- Cat Scratch Disease
- Plague
- Flea Allergy Dermatitis
Fleas are particularly difficult to get rid of once a pet brings them into the home, in part because of their ongoing life cycle which can result in hundreds of fleas within a short time frame.
Ticks are also found in our region and carry serious tick-borne diseases that include:
- Lyme Disease
- Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
- Tick Fever
- Ehrlichiosis
Because of the severity of these illnesses, the South Auburn Veterinary Hospital team recommends keeping your cat or dog on a flea and tick preventive all year. Please contact us to inquire about the right preventive for your four-legged friend.
